Jeff Wagner in Metal Maniacs, June 1997

When vocalist Darren White parted with the band two years ago, not even the most dedicated Anathema fans (myself included) expected the remaining quartet to ever produce works as frighteningly monstrous as the Serenades and Pentecost III offerings. The Silent Enigma not only proved us all wrong, but paved the way for the beautiful revelation of Eternity. Capitalizing on all they've been building up to, and stretching far beyond the realms of what anyone expected, Eternity is the definitive Anathema recording. They've nailed it!
Written and performed with a scope and purpose rarely found in the bulk of today's releases, the disc flows with the grace of early '70s Pink Floyd records, allowing the band's vision to mature, embracing elements outside of the suffocating doom they're known for. Less morose and more full of hope than previous outings, pieces of Eternity such as "The Beloved," the powerfully stark "Suicide Veil," and the album's dramatic final moments "Cries On The Wind"/"Ascension" reveal a profound new facet of a band who've just stepped up to the next level. Vincent Cavanagh's vocals are earth and untainted by pretension, infused with a paralyzing passion, akin possibly to Roger Waters imitating Tom G. Warrior's most mournful laments, though more tuneful and melodic than such a comparison might suggest. "Far Away," the most psychedelic offering, best showcases the fluid harmonics and gentle feedback they've capture and made their trademark, featuring some stirring bass lines courtesy of co-songwriter Duncan Patterson. The three-part centerpiece of "Eternity" ponders and questions, "do you think we're forever?," allowing the listener to create his/her own interpretations. a heavy reliance on lush keyboard work will pretty much kick this band back up to a 5-piece on the live front.
A landmark piece of total god, Eternity is testament to metal's vastness and flexibility:  a completely personal musical journey, often subtle and understated, rising in intensity only when the song calls for it, crashing to climax, then collapsing only to rise again. In the realm of morphine-hazed atmospheric metallic art, Eternity is to die for.

-Glenn- From The Koffin #15

Do you remember their first album "Serenades+Crestfallen" with vocalist Darren White? When that album came out, people thought that was brilliant. Well it was, except for the vocalist. The band had plenty of talent to make great music but the vocalist was just so godawful that you couldn't bare to listen to them.  Although there were a few cool tracks back then that you could tolerate, the Anthema today doesn't even vaguely resemble the Anthema just a few years ago. Since Darren White departed, Vincent Cavanaugh took over the vocal duties and guitar playing. Boy, what a difference it makes to the sound!
Anathema finally released their third full length album titled "Eternity", which is a concept CD broken down into three parts. Song titles include "Angelica", the upbeat "Beloved", the sorrowful but brilliant "Suicidal Veil", along with each title track broken down into three parts. Not only does this album have great muscianship but the vocalist is oustanding. I really hate to say this because I hate The Cure so much but, Vincent, sounds a lot like Robert Smith.  His vocals really compliment the music and it gives the music a dark feel to it. For those of you that enjoy complex masterpieces, then "Eternity" is for you.

Even though Vincent's vocals aren't really in tune on this album, I find them brilliant. In my opinion, his passionate and lamenting singing is the best element of this record. And that says a lot, cause the album is great. "Sentient", "Angelica", the "Eternity" tracks, "Suicide Veil"... wow... I do think that this album has a few weaker songs, but it's not really worth mentioning. The production could be a lot better as well, but the quality of the songs and the passion in them more than make up for that.

"dimlit" means that something (usually a light, but in "Angelica"; love) isn't burning at full strength. A light bulb, daylight etc - when a light is dim, it's there, but kinda weak. "Lit" = past tense of "light" (as in the verb - "light a fire" etc). You native speakers, feel free to correct me or explain it in a better way.

Eternity..... if i could say anathema had a "best" album, this definately whould be it. But i can't. Every anathema album is a "best" album.

Eternity .... is much more atmospheric, although in a different way from their previous style. Clean electric guitar, acoustic guitar are used quite often as well as a few excellent lead harmonies(Angelica).
From the beginning of the album you just get this sense of despair and you know you are in for a passage through depths where few wish to dwell. Actually you could get this feeling before you even put the disc in, when you see the distressed look of a woman sitting over a child’s death bed. Lyrically this album explores the melancholy one feels as their lives are torn apart by lost love, acts of betrayal, and general misery that occurs. There is such emotion displayed in the lyrics on this album that you are certain that they're writen directly from their hearts.
Vincent Cavanagh puts out one of the greatest vocal performances in this style of music I’ve ever heard. He is able to portray great sadness and power, much like the legendary Pink Floyd vocalist Roger Waters. At points during ‘The Suicide Veil’ I think that you could easily convince someone that it was indeed Mr.Waters blasting out those tormented yet beautiful clean vocals. Don’t get me wrong though Vinny still holds his own sound firmly on this album.
After all the track on my cd player have finished, i feel completely mesmerised.... i'm not on earth.... i'm flying over a valley of feelings.... and could die peacefully....

10/10

...Born alone beneath pale sardonic skies
One love, one life, one sorrow...
...I won't reproach myself this time
A condemned man, granted a sweet reprieve
A turn of fate, a genial twist of the knife
Undying affection for life...

I agree with so many of the comments made above about this beautiful album. I have returned to it recently after a long break, and it has been in my player nearly every day over past weeks. Nothing comes close to it in overall emotional depth plus the sound too; to me it has a big almost symphonic sound with those lovely Les Paul power chords sprinkled about too. I guess there are times in your life when only this album will do, at other times it can be too emotionally devastating.

Favourites at present? well, 'suicide veil', then 'Eternity pt 3' followed by 'cries on the wind'. Then I always find that 'Ascension' picks me up again.

I like Darren as well! smile
But ... he wouldn't match in any song from "Eternity" ... I just don't see it... Darren - singin' Far Away ..for instance.. Vincent isn't in tune as well, but ... his voice enchants the music in a unique way... I can't describe it..
For "Eternity"
... never to return...
This album... is like a rainbow with all the colors of pain...

Ave dear gray brothers!

I've been looking exhaustively for information about Anathema's "Eternity" digipacks; the closest info I've got is at this web page: http://www.metal-archives.com/release.p … f35aeac909 . Still (as you can see), it's not really a detailed description of the diferent features of this albums digipack.

I've been quite disapointed in how difficult could it be to gather such information. I hope you could help me: I'm sure that *someone* has just made a detailed description of all the digipacks that exist (i.e. the japanese edition, the "red version", the common digipak, the regular ersion, etc.).

I hope you could help me. I thank you a lot my sorrowful brothers and sisters.

My deepest regards =)

ps. edit = typo

We realize the design is a little messy in Internet Explorer, but it will change only when new version of Anathemaniacs appears. For now you can switch to one of other web browsers like Mozilla Firefox or Opera (by the way, they both are much better solutions than IE).
